is the single most important aspect of bird care. Nutrition impacts
the health, longevity, appearance and behavior of birds in captivity.” </span></i><br />
<i><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">- Clinical Avian Medicine</span></i><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here are the common options, followed by Harrison's Bird Foods - our recommended choice.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi80PinxbFHgGjugzqukvrhxJeCd0y9lsoxVlfzBksUPSrwW9O3_QzsChkMLOhrsqR_Y3vXiQKZwzR9mVROl9VU_Ql8MypWCG0f5lHqhBKIILhHq61PfGNvp-oVQCJTaHq8tZ4VmEWIm7AI/s1600/image---seeds.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi80PinxbFHgGjugzqukvrhxJeCd0y9lsoxVlfzBksUPSrwW9O3_QzsChkMLOhrsqR_Y3vXiQKZwzR9mVROl9VU_Ql8MypWCG0f5lHqhBKIILhHq61PfGNvp-oVQCJTaHq8tZ4VmEWIm7AI/s200/image---seeds.jpg" height="133" width="200" /></a></span></b></div>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">SEEDS </span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A diet of seeds (even if they are vitamin fortified) simply does not meet the bird's basic nutritional requirements. Commonly fed seeds are deficient in at least 32 essential nutrients. As early as 1923, scientists observed health deficiencies in caged parrots that were fed seed diets, yet these diets continue to be fed to this day. Birds that eat seeds may be difficult to convert to a healthier diet.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<b><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Other concerns</span></b><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Many seeds contain high levels of pesticides and preservatives</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Seed quality/freshness may be questionable </span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Birds tend to selectively “sort” and eat only their favorite seed</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Seeds may be artificially colored • May stimulate aggression, featherpicking and chronic egg laying</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<i><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">SHOULD IT BE LEFT UP TO THE BIRD?<br />“Birds
do not exhibit nutritional wisdom when selecting dietary ingredients;
they show a preference for high energy, lipid-rich seeds, high
carbohydrate seeds and fruits.” -Clinical Avian Medicine</span></i><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-CJabuDhwIom-AWUHpb92Kth9lVVegrFKvd8qk0qA1YMsSwsQqNWlqXq_yZgMmM4O4yUAwng1z6gSwYaSJS3749BS-sNvs2QDQC4rdGAWK9KG56-HotD54Nw1WwbmTTh8y-vdkOsCcqKi/s1600/image-fruits.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-CJabuDhwIom-AWUHpb92Kth9lVVegrFKvd8qk0qA1YMsSwsQqNWlqXq_yZgMmM4O4yUAwng1z6gSwYaSJS3749BS-sNvs2QDQC4rdGAWK9KG56-HotD54Nw1WwbmTTh8y-vdkOsCcqKi/s200/image-fruits.jpg" height="131" width="200" /></span></a></div>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">FRUIT, VEGETABLE, TABLE FOOD & COOKING</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Fruits and/or vegetables contribute little or nothing to the 32 missing essential components of a seed diet.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">These items are not a balanced and wholesome food for pet birds as they consist mainly of water and celulose and have low content of vitamins, minerals and trace elements. They are highly perishable and often highly contaminated with pesticides and herbicides.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Diets that regularly include "people food" or leftovers are not just simply lacking in nutrition, they can be downright bad for birds. Birds should not be fed things like meat, chicken bones, potato chips, pizza, pasta or beans, which often have excessive fat, salt, caffeine, MSG, refined sugar or refined flour. Table foods may stimulate aggression, featherpicking and chronic egg laying.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;"><i>“Presenting a bird with an array of fresh
produce, seeds and nuts does not necessarily provide a nutritionally
balanced diet. Commonly fed seeds are deficient in a number of
nutrients. Much of the (grocery) produce is sold in its immature state
of growth, and even when mature, it does not have the equivalent
nutrient profiles of wild food items. Thus such produce is unable to
improve the nutrient profile of the diet.”</i> </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">COLORED PELLETS</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Pellets and kibbles made from fine-milled, bleached flours, meals and byproducts may be uniform in appearance, however the nutritional value of these diets is questionable. Artificially coloring is a marketing tool that is incorporated solely to impress bird-owners. </span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<i><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In
an article published by the Wall Street Journal, Randall Brue, Kaytee's
Nutritional Biochemist and Head of Research, stated, "Birds don't care
much about color, flavor or the shape of their food ... but their owners
care".</span></i>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-612905426310138278.post-80951094889228562452014-01-07T11:00:00.000-08:002015-01-09T11:12:07.148-08:003. YOU'LL SEE THE DIFFERENCE<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Healthy, properly fed birds will exhibit certain features. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• The beak is smooth and shiny without signs of peeling.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• The nares (nostrils) are clean and free of accumulations.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• The bird stands erect and alert on the perch. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• The respiration is smooth and even with no sounds of wheezing.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• The droppings are moist, the urine is clear and the urates are white.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">•
The feathers fit together like a garment - no bald spots, no picked
feathers, and no tattered, broken or abnormally-colored feathers.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> •
The feet grip the perch strongly and evenly. The bottoms of the feet
show a definite ....pattern—they are not smooth; nor do they show
pressure points.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> • The nails are the proper length, smooth and shiny.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• The skin on the legs and face is glistening, smooth, and soft with no signs of flaking. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• There is no sign of swelling or bleeding on the body.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• The bird is calm and does not bite, scream, or behave in an aggressive manner.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">IMPROPER NUTRITION is the cause of 90% of health problems and the leading cause of death in pet birds</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6dGYvNw1JOAblutYHKsnREuK5-XrBAK74saFntxf6unJTGVGM_xra53MYdjTO81038ugEBM7STgv9Scbjprzrj0K4aL8pqQZ4RqmvQ1pZ1TW4mlUkzqO7UKdg5dTqnH6sxRsO5FiYuyAh/s1600/image-inevitable-signs.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6dGYvNw1JOAblutYHKsnREuK5-XrBAK74saFntxf6unJTGVGM_xra53MYdjTO81038ugEBM7STgv9Scbjprzrj0K4aL8pqQZ4RqmvQ1pZ1TW4mlUkzqO7UKdg5dTqnH6sxRsO5FiYuyAh/s320/image-inevitable-signs.jpg" height="205" width="320" /></span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Improper nutrition involves all of the systems of the body and is seen as: abnormalities in body weight and shape; unusual appearances of feathers, nails, beaks and skin; undesirable behavior; and disturbances in all the body's systems. Nutritional deficiencies appear to accelerate the aging process of birds, primarily through the loss of moisture and tissue elasticity. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Often, the signs of improper nutrition in pet birds are not apparant or go completely overlooked by the owner.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The value of a proper diet over the life of the bird is monumental. Birds fed a poor diet will become malnourished, which will start a chain of events leading to a decline in the bird's overall health. The </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">digestive system suffers first. The bacterial population of the digestive tract becomes unbalanced. Once this has occurred, opportunistic pathogens find it easier to invade, and gram-negative rods and yeast counts </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">increase.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This opens the door for bacterial infections and other ailments related to the imune system.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Over time every part of the body will reflect the </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">condition of the bird's health. If the bird reaches the latter stages of improper nutrition, damage to internal organs may be so severe that it is too late to save the bird. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Any change in your bird’s eating habits, behavior or personality could be due to illness. It is important to discuss these changes with your veterinarian. Your bird’s health may depend on it.</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-612905426310138278.post-56226767778444944432014-01-07T10:57:00.002-08:002015-01-09T11:35:15.261-08:004. <span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In addition to following the strict organic guidelines specified by the
USDA we have some high standards of our own to ensure the very best
quality product for your bird.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Premium grains and other ingredients are contracted by HBD to be grown on fertile organic farms throughout North America. </span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">•
A third party organic certifier verifies the certification of the raw
ingredients, making sure they meet the requirements designated under the
USDA's rules regarding organic certification.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">•
All grains and other ingredients are tested (via independent
laboratory) throughout the manufacturing process for mycotoxins and
rancidity.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• For the extrusion process, the ingredients
are ground and thoroughly mixed. Then the various sized and formulated
nuggets are extruded, toasted, cooled and then packaged under careful
supervision.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />

<strong><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Why Certified Organic?</span></strong><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The
term "certified organic" cannot be used casually. In this country,
there are strict guidelines set up by the United States Department of
Agriculture (as well as private certifying agencies) in order to
authorize a facility to use the term "certified organic." And being part
of the organic culture demands a significant commitment to the entire
system. </span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In today’s market people use the terms “all
natural,” “organic” and “certified organic” interchangeably, when there
really is a significant difference. Only “certified organic” has been
approved by a 3rd party agency after a thorough study of the entire
process of growing the ingredients and manufacturing the final product
to ensure that all steps have been performed within the strict
guidelines.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In order to qualify as "certified organic," all products must adhere to the following standards:</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Crops must be grown without the use of artificial fertilizers or pesticides.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">•
There is generally a required conversion period to organic methods,
being two years (for ground crops) or three years (for perennials).</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">•
In order to break the cycles of pests and diseases, appropriate crop
rotation is practiced for ground crops, which also helps to maintain
soil fertility and structure.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• No post-harvest chemical treatments are allowed.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Fertility is provided by natural organic manures, composts and fertilizers -- the use of synthetic chemicals is prohibited.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• The use of genetically modified (GM) seeds or other materials is not permitted.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">During the production phase, all organic producers must:</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Be certified by a recognized certification body and undergo a rigorous annual inspection by qualified inspectors.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">•
Adhere to very strict standards that cover every aspect of food
production, such as growing, packaging, processing and transport.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Maintain fully audited records of every stage of production to ensure complete traceability from farm to table.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">•
Provide official certification numbers or logos of each certification
body on the packaging, as this is the consumer's guarantee of
authenticity.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If foods are to be produced, the manufacturers must also be:</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Certified by an organic certification body.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Keep all ingredients used in organic products separate from ingredients for use in conventional products at all times.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">•
Maintain detailed routine records, including cleaning and processing
schedules, which must be made available for audit by certification
inspectors at all times.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• The stringent controls
associated with the production and processing of organic products ensure
consistent adherence to guidelines set up by the recognized
certification bodies.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Migratory Bird Council projects annual wild bird deaths due to pesticide poisoning to <br />exceed 67 million.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It
is well-documented that birds in the wild are dying in mass numbers due
to exposure to pesticides. Birds are killed, sickened or weakened by
poisons or affected by the loss of food or habitat resources. Be it from
direct contact or ingestion of toxic residues, pesticide poisoning
kills more birds than any other cause.</span><br />

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We know that pesticides are devastating the wild bird population, but what do we know about pesticides and pet birds? </span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It
is not a secret that parrots are especially sensitive to environmental
toxins, such as certain metals, chemical cleaners, and overheated
plastic-coated cookware</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Chemicals that normally are
only irritating to humans and other animals can be extremely toxic to
parrots. Yet little thought is given to the potential cancers,
neurological problems, hormonal imbalances, allergies and disruptions of
the immune system that may be attributed directly to pesticide residues
on foods that parrots ingest. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The EWG (Environmental Working Group) concluded that
more than half of the total dietary risk from pesticides was
concentrated in just 12 foods from the produce section of the
supermarket: strawberries, bell peppers, spinach, cherries, peaches,
cantaloupe, celery, apples, apricots, green beans, grapes and cucumbers.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Organic
farming, or sustainable agriculture, is the first step toward moving
away from this dangerous trend. Proper crop rotation breaks the cycles
of pest and disease problems and balances the nutrient demands of
specific crops. Alternative pest controls, such as certain insects or
plantings, are incorporated into agriculture. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Organic
farming works to bring you safer and healthier products, keep the
farmlands in tip-top shape and leave the surrounding environment
uncontaminated.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The overall impact of the organic
culture involves the entire world's ecosystem, because the battle
against toxic contaminants threatens all life on earth in one way or
another.</span><br />

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Harrison’s
strongly recommends that pet bird owners establish and maintain an
ongoing relationship with an avian veterinarian. Your veterinarian can
advise and oversee as you prepare to convert your bird’s diet.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Your
veterinarian can help your bird make a smooth and safe transition to a
new, healthy diet and be available for subsequent examinations or
emergencies. </span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A veterinary visit for a general health examination should be scheduled before you start your bird on </span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Harrison's
Bird Foods. Some birds are so sick from being fed an improper diet
that they may require critical care before undergoing a diet change.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Some
birds may require holistic support to make the transition smoothly.
Because underlying medical problems can be made worse by the inherent
stress of a diet change, exams at three and twelve weeks following the
diet conversion are recommended. Your avian veterinarian can also help
you select which Harrison's formula is right for your bird.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It's a
good idea to purchase a gram scale to have at home. In this way, you
will be able to monitor your bird's weight during the diet conversion
process. You might want to weigh your bird at the same time each morning
for two weeks to establish normal fluctuations in its weight. Any
serious fluctuations of 10% total body weight or more should be reported
to your avian veterinarian.</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-612905426310138278.post-66443780517993373312014-01-07T10:53:00.000-08:002015-01-09T11:14:54.059-08:008. SIGNS OF AN EMERGENCY<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Once you have successfully converted your bird to a Harrison's
formula and have established a good relationship with your veterinarian,
your bird should have very few nutritionally-related health problems.
However, if you notice any of the following signs, you should contact
your veterinarian immediately:</span><br />

MAXIMIZE YOUR BIRD'S HEALTH<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>In Addition to a Great Diet, Other Daily Living Elements and a Safe Living Environment Must be Provided for Pet Birds to Thrive</b> </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<b><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sunlight UV: </span></b><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Provide
adequate unfiltered sunlight and shade. Parrots must have direct daily
access to sunlight or UVB full spectrum lighting in order to obtain the
ideal levels of vitamin D3 and normal calcium levels in the blood. Diet
alone does not produce the ideal levels.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Allow outdoor sunlight
(not through glass) for a minimum of 20 minutes a week. Sun replacement
lamps are necessary for birds in areas where sun is not accessible.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<b><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Temperature and Humidity: </span></b><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Regulate
temperatures between 65° and 85° F (18° and 30°C). Birds in dry
climates or under artificial heat need the humidity artificially
elevated. 50% is ideal. </span><br />

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Cleanliness:</b> </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Clean
the bird's living space regularly. Do not allow dust, rust, old feces,
etc. to exist in this space. Make sure cleaning supplies are bird-safe.
Soap and water are the standards.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Changes:</b> </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Allow pet birds to acclimate to new environments. Reduce factors that may contribute to stress during times of change.</span><br />

<b><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Foraging and Life Enrichment Activities: </span></b><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Parrots
in the wild spend the majority of their day foraging for food. Captive
parrots are challenged by boredom, resulting in behavior issues not
limited to feather picking etc. Daily interaction and the provision of
safe foraging materials can play a key role in managing these concerns. </span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Daily Exercise:</b> </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Parrots
require daily exercise for great health. Many face the challenge of
restricted room or lack of functional flight feathers. Ask your avian
veterinarian to show you how to safely conduct wing-flapping exercises.
Provide space enough and materials for birds to be able to safely climb
and hang. Play periods are encouraged daily.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<b><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Safety Checklist</span></b><br />

DIET CONVERSION 10 Tips<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Switching a bird's diet to Harrison's is
typically relatively simple. Just offer the food and the bird eats. Some
birds can be very picky about any new item. Birds specifically that are
addicted to seeds or table foods may more difficult to switch. The most
important detail is to ascertain with certainty that the bird is </span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<b><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Quick Tips for Conversion to Harrison’s Bird Foods</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If your bird exhibits resistance to conversion try the following tips:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1. <a href="http://store.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/TREATS-_-BIRD-BREAD/products/80/"><strong>Harrison’s Bird Bread Mix</strong></a>
can be used as an extremely effective conversion tool. Food that the
bird currently eats can be added to the mix and baked in the bread.
Gradually reduce the amount of that food and replace with the
appropriate Harrison’s formula (<a href="http://healthybird.blogspot.com/2014/01/11-diet-conversion-small-bird.html"><strong>as shown here</strong></a>).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2. Change the bird’s
environment. Try moving your bird to a new enclosure, such as a box,
aquarium or even a new cage. Remove all the toys, perches and bowls and
offer High Potency™ on a solid surface of the floor.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3.
Use a mirror or white paper. Sprinkling food over a mirror or sheet of
white paper placed on the bottom of the enclosure works especially well
for budgies. A bird old enough to be socialized may eat to compete with
the “rival” bird in the mirror. A white paper background may draw
attention to the food particles.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4. Slowly “wean” your
bird from seeds. In the evening, offer seeds from the food bowl for only
1 hour. Then, remove the seeds and replace with High Potency (<a href="http://store.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/HIGH-POTENCY-COARSE/productinfo/HPC/"><strong>High Potency Coarse</strong></a> - <a href="http://store.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/HIGH-POTENCY-FINE/productinfo/HPF/"><strong>High Potency Fine</strong></a> - <a href="http://store.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/HIGH-POTENCY-SUPER-FINE/productinfo/HSF/"><strong>High Potency Super Fine</strong></a>)The next
day, give your bird seeds for only 30 minutes in the morning and
evening. The third day, reduce the time to only 15 minutes twice a day.
And finally, offer only High Potency on the fourth day. Observe the
bird’s droppings for normal frequency.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5. Feed your bird at mealtime. Place
the food on a plate, move it around with your finger or a spoon and
pretend to eat it in front of your bird.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">6. Offer <a href="http://store.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/POWER-TREATS/productinfo/CPT01/"><strong>Power Treats</strong></a>, <a href="http://store.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/PEPPER-LIFETIME-COARSE/productinfo/PLC/"><strong>Pepper Lifetime Coarse</strong></a> or <a href="http://store.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/ADULT-LIFETIME-MASH/productinfo/ALM/"><strong>Adult Lifetime Mash</strong></a> . Birds love the
taste of Power Treats and Pepper Lifetime Coarse. These foods can be
crushed for smaller birds. Adult Lifetime Mash also has an appealing
taste to help your bird try new food.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7. Use a
converted bird as a role model. House your bird near another that’s
already eating Harrison’s Bird Foods, or use a “trainer bird” in the
same cage as a role model for eating.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8 Heat (warm) or
moisten the food. Heat the High Potency™ slightly or moisten it with a
small amount of fruit juice or <a href="http://store.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/15-oz-ORGANIC-RED-PALM-FRUIT-OIL/productinfo/PFO/"><strong>certified organic red palm fruit oil.</strong></a></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">9.
Schedule a supervised diet change with your veterinarian. Some birds do
not recognize new items as food, and placing the bird in a clinic where
monitoring can be done will help keep your bird healthy through the
conversion.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When it comes to improving the diet, the
biggest disservice you can do to your bird is to just give up after the
bird shows resistance to conversion."</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If the conversion
steps don’t work the first time, you can feed the familiar food for a
short time and then try again. The effort is worthwhile for the long
term health of your bird.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The bird’s weight (in grams),
body condition, attitude and droppings should be monitored carefully on
a daily basis in small and medium birds and at least twice a week in
large birds.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<b><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Watch Your Bird Closely</span></b><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Just
because food has been ground to a powder, thrown around, or he's in the
feeding cup all the time, is not a sign that your bird is eating or
eating enough. </span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If any of the following should occur *(change in
behavior, droppings or weight), or you are unsure about your bird’s
health call your avian veterinarian and reschedule the diet conversion: </span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">BEHAVIOR: appears cold, listless, fluffed-up or reluctant to play or talk.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">DROPPINGS:
very loose or significantly reduced feces, while the amount of
urine/urates has increased, or the feces changes color to yellow or dark
green (a color change to brown or light green is normal due to the
formulation of the diet).</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">WEIGHT:

loses more than 10% (3g = budgie or</span> 10g = cockatiel), resume feeding the
previous diet and call your veterinarian.</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-612905426310138278.post-32277982075376655752014-01-07T10:48:00.002-08:002015-12-30T11:19:11.185-08:0011. <br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A very stubborn pair of budgies who were on a sole diet of spray millet were brought to us for a conversion trial. (Budgies are shown in this trial – but other small species including cockatiel, canary, lovebird etc. all typically convert similarly)</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The pair was ravenous for spray millet but ignored any other foods offered.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">At that point we baked a batch of <b><a href="http://store.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/TREATS-_-BIRD-BREAD/products/80/">Harrison’s Bird Bread</a></b> in small muffin shapes with spray millet mixed into the bread. The bread was broken up into pieces and placed on top of a clean paper towel at the bottom of the cage.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As expected, for the first few days the pair sorted through the muffins for the millet. On day three however we observed that they were also now eating bits of the Bird Bread. The amount of millet mixed into the bread was reduced and eventually replaced with <b>High Potency Fine</b>. After a few more days the millet was completely removed and High Potency Fine was scattered amongst the pieces of Bird Bread on top of the white paper towel.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Within a few days not only were they off spray millet completely - they were now eating only Bird Bread and High Potency Fine</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Though continuing Bird Bread as a treat is optional, after one more baked batch of Bird Bread was finished the diet was switched to High Potency Fine exclusively.</span><br />

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Document progress daily. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;"><b>Never starve a bird.</b> </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;"><b><br /></b></span></span>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>IMPORTANT:</b></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Diet Conversion is a Challenge not to be taken Lightly! It is imperative to immediately return a bird to its original diet if it refuses to eat the new diet.Small birds have a rapid metabolism and can starve to death in as little as 36-48 hours if they do not get enough food to eat. Owners should consult with an avian veterinarian and set up a conversion program that works but does not harm the bird in the process.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Modifying a bird’s diet is one of the biggest behavioral challenges an owner will undertake. Most issues can be overcome with patience and perseverance. Educating the owner about the benefits of feeding a formulated diet versus a seed-based diet is the first challenge.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Any dietary changes should be undertaken gradually. An important concern is the bird’s refusal to eat a “new” food, leading to significant weight loss. Weighing the bird (in grams) on a daily basis using a gram scale is the best method for monitoring adequate food consumption. Weight fluctuations greater than 10% are considered problematic. Even if provided with supplemental food, birds can starve to death while merely appearing to chew their food but not consuming it. Grinding the food into a fine powder is not the same as eating the food.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Monitoring droppings is an excellent indication of the amount of food the bird is eating. Prior to the diet change, the number and character of the droppings (color, amount, liquid, form, shape, lack of odor, staining) should be noted. Any change in the volume or number of droppings (usually a dramatic decrease in amount) indicates insufficient food consumption.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Owners should not be confused by the appearance of wet droppings, which they may assume to be normal. Wet droppings usually have little fecal matter produced from food consumption. Wet droppings are often a sign of weight loss as fat and muscle are converted to energy and water. The character of the droppings will change as the bird consumes more formulated diet – they usually become more firm with a definite shape.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Any dietary changes should be undertaken gradually. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Some birds switch to a new diet with little to no work on the owner’s part. Other birds are very selective about what they eat. Birds should not be left alone to select their own diets. Like human children, birds will often choose the wrong foods and “parental intervention” is required. The single most important thing you can do for your bird is to feed it right.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>The”Controlled Meals” Diet Conversion Method (medium and large birds only)</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Items required:<br /><span style="color: #789ec4; text-decoration: underline;"><a class="first-child last-child" href="http://store.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/HIGH-POTENCY-FINE/productinfo/HPF/" style="color: #789ec4; text-decoration: underline;"><strong>High Potency Coarse</strong></a></span></span><br />
</span><br />
<ul><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<li class="first-child"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Make fresh Harrison’s nuggets available<strong> at all times</strong> throughout the day.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Select ONE item that you know the bird is known to eat (in many birds this will be seed). Discontinue <em>every other item</em> from the bird’s old diet.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Make that ONE item available three times a day, for a full 15 minutes (no shorter, no longer), then remove that food <em>completely</em>. Do not limit the amount of this food available during the 15 minute window (controlled meal). Space these feedings out by periods of 6 hours. Maintain a strict schedule.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Offer no other food at any time.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> Taper. Once the bird is eating the nuggets remove one feeding window of the older food. The more the bird eats of Harrison’s remove a second window.</span></li>
<li class="last-child"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Once the bird is switched completely to nuggets discontinue all feeding windows.</span></li>
</span></ul>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Birds are notorious tricksters.</strong> Confirm the bird is really eating by weighing the bird (daily) and observing frequency, volume and color of their stools. Stools should never be hard, dark or infrequent. Once fully converted, items like dark green veggies, sweet potato and carrot may be reintroduced. Feed Harrison’s at around 85% or more of the total diet with the remaining foods being the veggies mentioned above.<br /> This method is best used in birds who’s eating habits can be individually observed. Split birds up into different enclosures or rooms during this period if necessary.</span><br />

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today,
formulated bird foods are the choice of avian veterinarians and
educated bird owners because they know improper nutrition is the number
one cause of poor health in companion birds. But what they may not know
is what is in the formulated diet that they are feeding. Or better yet,
what is left out.</span><br />

USING HARRISON'S?<b><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">General Daily Feeding Recommendations </span></b><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To maximize effectiveness Harrison’s Bird Foods should make up around 90% of the total daily diet (by weight).</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• feed fresh food daily, do not "top off".</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• to help reduce waste, feed as distinct meals.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• see invidual product info for specific details. </span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• in most situations it is ok to allow bird to eat all they want. </span><br />
<b><br /><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Supplementing With Other Food Items </span></b><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Supplementation should be limited to no more than 10% of the overall diet. It is important to carefully follow supplementation guidelines for Harrison’s to be fully effective. Over-supplementation may result in dilution of nutrients.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Offer certified organic vegetables and fruits in small quantities; select dark yellow meaty or dark green leafy items such as sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, winter squash, broccoli, parsley, spinach, mango or papaya.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is not recommended to supplement with vitamins, minerals or other bird or animal food products.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Further information is available at </span><br />
<a href="http://harrisonsbirdfoods.com/supplementing"><span style="color: #76a5af; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>HarrisonsBirdFoods.com/supplementing</strong></span></a><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<b><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Storage & Shelf Life</span></b><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Harrison’s is committed to protecting your bird from artificial preservatives. Here are some suggestions to keep your food fresh:</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Smell the product for freshness prior to feeding.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Squeeze all air out of the bag and zip it shut at the top.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• If the zip lock gets removed or damaged, fold the top over several times and close with a clip.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Keep food in original bag. The Harrison’s bag has a foil barrier that blocks oxygen permeation and blocks light that damages the vitamin content.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Do not repackage food into plastic bags or Tupperware as the food will remain much fresher for a longer period in the Harrison’s bag.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Use contents within 4-6 weeks of opening bag.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Purchase Harrison’s foods only in their original packaging. Never purchase repackaged food.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Refrigerating or freezing does not extend expiration dating but may help to maintain freshness. </span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-612905426310138278.post-73629630971882999992014-01-07T10:44:00.000-08:002015-01-09T11:16:44.016-08:0015.
